Looking Ahead at the Rest of 2024

We just wrapped up OHBAPalooza, and what a whirlwind it has been over the past few weeks! We're thrilled with how everything turned out and so grateful to see so many people join us and share their passion for organics. It's moments like these that make all the hard work worthwhile, knowing the positive impact we’re having on our community.

I wanted to take a moment to talk about what’s coming up in 2024 because we have a packed schedule full of educational opportunities!

First up, we’re excited about Spanish Organics with Carmelo Orellana and Ines Diaz! This event will be similar to our other programs, focusing on the importance of organics, but it will be conducted entirely in Spanish. It’s designed specifically for the Spanish-speaking community engaged in horticulture. Given that 38% of Houston’s population speaks Spanish, it’s essential that we offer our educational programs in their language as well. We’ll cover topics like soil health, nutrient cycling, the impact of non-organic substances, and regenerative soil management. This event will take place on Thursday, September 12, 2024, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Memorial Park Conservancy. Please visit our website for more details.

Next, we have the So You Want to Grow Good Food Conference! This event features a powerful lineup of speakers, including Bob Randall, Ivy Lawrence-Walls, and Fred Billings. The conference aims to empower individuals to take control of their food and health by diving into the essentials of organic growing with presentations from leading experts. Bob Randall, co-founder of OHBA & Urban Harvest, and the man behind “Year Round Gardening,” will discuss “Five Great Reasons to Grow Your Own Organic Food” and “Growing Food without Toxic Poisons.” Ivy Lawrence-Walls, owner of Ivy Leaf Farms and food accessibility advocate, will present “The Importance of Growing for Community.” Fred Billings, owner of GardenforLife/GrowforLife and community advocate, will speak on “The Details are in the Dirt,” where you'll learn about practical, creative and efficient gardening techniques and resources. The “how to” of planning, soil/compost preparations, planting, crop management, harvesting, and clean-up. You won’t want to miss this event! The conference will be held on October 5, 2024, at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

Our final event of the year will be our Fall Gala. We’ve moved it up a bit this year, so we’re calling it our Fall Gala! This is a special time for us to come together, celebrate the successes of the year, and look ahead to what’s on the horizon. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with OHBA’s board of directors and discuss upcoming speakers and events. This event is always a lot of fun, and we hope you’ll join us on Saturday, November 16, 2024, from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM!

There’s still so much to learn in the remainder of 2024, and we hope to see you at our future events! For more information, please visit our website.
